Shannon Cohen-Balancing Life

Shannon was born and raised in Cottonwood, California. While in high school, she worked as a Dental Assistant through the ROP program. She later attended the Shasta College Dental Hygiene Program where she received an Associates of Science Degree and became a Registered Dental Hygienist.

Shannon enjoys playing & watching sports, painting, and spending time with her family and friends.

Favorite sport?

My favorite sport to play would be a tie between basketball and volleyball. I also love to watch my kids, play soccer, basketball, and wrestle.

All-time favorite Disney character?

My favorite Disney character is Mulan because of her bravery.

One ability that you think everyone should possess?

I think everyone should possess the ability to be empathetic.

Best book you have ever read?

I like to read “how to books” when I want to learn something new, or master a new skill.

What makes your day better?

Being able to spend quality time with my family makes my day better.

What period would you travel to if you were given a time-machine?

If I were given a time machine, I would travel to the future to see what new technology and inventions have been created.

One musical instrument you would like to master?

If I could master one musical instrument, it would be the violin because it’s my favorite instrument to listen to.

What gets you motivated?

I get motivated when I know I’m making a difference and accomplishing new tasks.

What are you proud of?

I am proud of my family. We all work hard and try to do our best in life.

Any advice for future award winners?

My advice for future award winners would be: to remember that you deserve the award, and you were recognized for a reason.

Clayton Romo-Working Together

“I am grateful, and it feels very nice to be recognized and appreciated.”

Clayton was born in San Jose, and moved to Redding when he was 8. He went to DeVry for a BS in Business Technical Management. He has been married for 15 years and has 5 kids and 3 dogs.

His favorite hobbies include creating digital art, playing board games, kayak fishing, and playing and writing music.

One ability that you think everyone should possess?

Empathy

What makes your day better?

Watching my favorite movies Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

200 years into the Future.

Coleen Wilkes-Embracing Change

I feel very proud of myself after winning the guiding values award. I enjoy my job, and I love working with everyone at the Redding Rancheria.

Coleen grew up in a small town “Montgomery Creek” just east of Redding. She was born and raised in Shasta County, California. She graduated from Institute of Technology with a Medical Assistant Certificate.

Coleen enjoys helping others and talking with the elders and listening to their stories.

Favorite Sport?

I do not follow any sports teams, as I feel there are better things I could do with my spare time.

All-time favorite Disney character?

My all- time favorite disney character would have to be stich from Lilo and Stitch as he is cute and a little wild.

One ability that you think everyone should possess?

One ability that I wish everyone should possess would be to live a healthy life with no worries.

Best book you have ever read?

The best book I have ever read would have to be “A Bag of Bones” written by Grant Towndolly.

What makes your day better?

The one thing that makes my day better is knowing that my children are safe and in good health.

What period would you travel to if you were given a time-machine?

I think if I was given a time machine I would probably travel about 10 years ahead of time to see what my future looked like.

One musical instrument you would like to master?

One musical instrument I would like to master would be playing the piano because it is just such a peaceful sound.

What gets you motivated?

The one thing that gets me motivated every day is knowing that there are a lot of people that count on me so I must keep pushing forward.

What are you proud of?

I am very proud of myself for conquering my goals, and breaking the negative cycles in my life to become the healthy person I am today.

Any advice for future winners?

My advice for future award winners would be to try your best and be ok if you fail because you can always try again.

Tianna Lendt-Doing What’s Right

“I am very happy and appreciative of winning this award. “

Tianna is from New Ulm, Minnesota. She spent her childhood moving around southern Minnesota. She graduated from Minnetonka High School early in 2003.

At 19 she went hitch hiking across the United States and ended up in Redding California and has been here ever since. She loves being outdoors hiking, walking, and especially rock hounding.

All-time favorite Disney character?

Stitch

One ability that you think everyone should possess?

I think that everyone should have the ability to teleport.

Best book you have ever read?

One good book I read was Dean Kontz Shadow fires.

What makes your day better?

Coffee always makes my day better.

What period would you travel to if you were given a time-machine?

If I could travel to any time period, I think it would have to be any that dinosaurs roamed. I love reptiles!

What gets you motivated?

Money always gets me motivated 🙂

What are you proud of?

I am proud of my mom for teaching me independence and great work ethic.

Any advice for future award winners?

Never give up, work hard and always smile!

Josh Manutai-Respecting Differences

“I am very grateful, but anxious because being a focal point of attention for any reason, isn’t my strong suit. “

Josh grew up in the Redding area and enjoys raising a family here as well. He spent the majority of his free time doing family traveling and activities with his wife (Malia), daughter (Alayla), and son (Arrow). A few of his favorites are biking, hiking, and star gazing.

What makes your day better?

My day gets better when I’m out making memories with my family.

One ability that you think everyone should possess?

One ability I think everyone should have is to look at things objectively.

All-time favorite Disney character?

My all-time favorite Disney Character is Mufasa.

Favorite sport?

My favorite sport is Lacrosse (Lax).

Best book you have ever read?

My favorite book(s) would be the Harry Potter Series.

What period would you travel to if you were given a time-machine?

If I was given a time machine I would go back roughly five years when both my kids were their youngest together, just to have those moments again.

One musical instrument you would like to master?

I always wanted to learn to play the piano.

What gets you motivated?

My wife and kids are my motivators.

What are you proud of?

I’m proud of my wife for putting her goals and aspirations on hold to stay at home and be the amazing mother that she is.

Do what you are passionate about, and do it with enthusiasm and integrity.

Christine Boring-Serving Others

“I am very humbled to be a guiding value award recipient.”

Christine was raised in both Southern and Northern California. She moved to Redding initially in 1992 and later moved to a few other places afterwards and came back home for good in 2007. She was put up for adoption at birth in Los Angeles and recently found 2 sisters who she hopes to meet this summer. She also found 2 nieces that were adopted as young girls by one of our patients here at the Rancheria.

She attended UNR in 1996 and became a certified paralegal. In 2007 she became a Pharmacy Technician through Shasta College. She loves to be outside, horseback riding, paddle boarding, gardening, fishing, camping, at the beach, and anything water related.

Favorite sport?

Volleyball and NFL

All-time favorite Disney character?

Simba

One ability that you think everyone should possess?

To be thoughtful of others.

Best book you have ever read?

The Shack

What makes your day better?

Any day spent with my girls and/or grandchildren.

What period would you travel to if you were given a time-machine?

Back to the 1980’s so I could make some different choices.

Piano
